per se

Per Se

What does that mean?

"~~ per se"  means  "~~ in itself"  / "~~ in and of itself"
I don’t like baseball per se.
I don’t like baseball in itself.
I don’t like baseball in and of itself.
I don’t like baseball intrinsically.

The game of baseball is not fun. But going to a baseball game and experiencing the thrill, the excitement, the food, the smell, the sounds, that’s great!
"I don’t like something per se , however ~~."

A: Shane  you’re going to a baseball game. l I thought you didn't like baseball.
S: I don’t like baseball per se, but I love going to the game.

When we’re arguing or when we want clarify how we feel about something so if you are arguing or debating something this is very useful expression.

  • For more examples !!
  • I don’t like something per se, however ~~.
  • I’m not against politics per se, but these day’s politics and business are too friendly.
  • I’m not rich per se but I have everything I need.
  • Studying per se does not guarantee success you need real life experience too.
  • Guns per se are not dangerous but gun owners can be.

Here is dialogue.

A : Should I throw this away?
B : Don't touch that t-shirt.
A : Why not? It's not worth anything! It's a rag!
B : It may not be valuable per se, but it means a lot to me.

A: 이거 버려도 될까?
B: 그 티셔츠 만지지마!
A: 왜안되? 이거 그럴 가치없어. 누더기라구!
B: 티셔츠자체는 가치없을진 몰라도, 나한테 그건 의미가 크다구.

    no less (so) than

    no less (so) than

    What does that mean?

'no less (so than)...' which is also similar to 'no more (so) than'.

A and B are basically the same. No more different no less different. They are same.

    For example ,
McDonald’s hamburgers are no more delicious than Burger King hamburgers.
McDonald's hamburgers are no less delicious than Burger King hamburgers.
McDonald's hamburgers are delicious just as much as Burger King hamburgers.

    Here is dialogue.

A : I'm trying to sleep less these days.
B : Why? Sleep is important. No less so than food and water.
    A : But I wanna start exercising.
B : Great, but don't reduce your sleep.

    What does that mean?

Sit down and don't move. You don't have to do anything except wait .
Wait and be patient. Just wait and be patient.
I'll do it for you. I'll bringing to you. It will happen. Don't worry. Relax. Sit tight.

ESL Although, Though, Even though, Despite, In spite of, However

Do you know differences between although, even though, despite and however ?

It's very confusing.Today I learned about that from Coach Shane. He gave a very very useful lesson.

Here's a question. What is correct?

    1. Although he is fat, he's very fast.
    2. Even though he is fat, he's very fast.
    3. Despite his being fat, he's very fast.
    4. He's fat; however, he's very fast.

    All of them are correct.
But one of these is just not quite right.
Can you figure out which sentence that might be ?
How could you change the sentence to make a sounds natural by just changing fat and fast-their position ?

There are General Rule of Thumb. We can call them heuristics. And Heuristics are rules of thumbs. For example rules that your grandmother makes are they in the law books? Nope~
But if grandmother says "Do this ! " then we should do that.

    Heuristics for although .
"Although He is fat, he's very fast" is o.k.
But it's more common to hear "Although he is fast, he is very FAT!"
That's just the rule of thumbs.

It is confusing. Just remember any pattern is going to be ok.
However if you want a heuristics then you should remember below.

    (AL)THOUGH
    Positive, negative
    EVEN THOUGH
    Negative, positive
    IN SPITE OF
    Positive, negative
    OTHERS
    ~
